Playing poker as a secondary/primary income- Worth it? Achievable?
I've been wondering lately what could happen if I played with a better bankroll and more often- i.e. 20-25 hours per week, or even full time (assuming part time works out) for a period of a year or two to save money.
Well, I did some research into it, and here's my results. Note that the final numbers may be slightly rounded off:
Playing 2/4 limit 'full time' 45hrs = 7939vpp/table/month
2 tables: 15,879vpp per month, 39,700fpp for platinum
7 months: 111,153vpp, 277,882 fpp,
5 months: 79,395vpp, 277,882fpp
Total: 190,000vpp 555,765 fpp = $8,892 +$1200 vip stellar =$10,100
another 10,00vpp push at the end = +$2600 milestone
Not bad for only 2 tables.
Now, for more (i.e. if you achieve the above, and want to move onwards):
Playing 4 PLO 1/2 full ring tables and 6 FLO or FLO/8 tables (2/4) for 45 hours (10 tabling) -OR- playing 8 tables of 2/4 limit/NL 6-handed should yield close to the following:
787,000vpp 2.65million fpp =$42,400 plus $19,000 milestone +$1,200 stellar
Within another 2 weeks - +$4,300 milestone (meaning just play more hands towards the end of the year)
Total after 1 yr (Assuming reaching the last milestone, which is only 13,000 vpp) : $66,800 .
If you do overtime and do 60 hour weeks, you would earn $96,000 ++ (since you would reach 1million vpps and receive the $20k bonus).
Here in israel, that translates into a lot of money that you can easily save for a year or two and use for a business or even a start towards an apartment.
This is all assuming you are break even at the tables (meaning earning just enough to cover the rake you pay).
To play at those limits comfortably, you would optimally need at least a $2.5k-3k roll (25buyins, where i consider a FL buyin to be 25bb or $100). By the end of the year, to continue at those limits, you should double your roll- meaning you earn $56,000-$86,000 after reinvesting another $10k into your bankroll (again, assuming you are a break even player- or even lost a total of $10k throughout the year). That's 26,500 shekels/month (overtime situations, 8 tables, 60 hours/week, or 11 tables for 45 hours per week).
Of course, games won't always be available but playing mostly 2/4 and switching between 1/2 to 3/6 fixed limit games when not enough 2/4 is available will average out to the same limits anyway.
I'm thinking of starting with a $2k roll for $25NL/PLO -50NL/PLO games and some 2/4 FLO/8 limit games once I [hopefully] grow the bankroll a little... I plan on playing 20-25 hours per week, and according to my part time calculation I should make $8-13k in one calendar year, meaning additional income of 2,500-4000 shekels per month (although more would be paid towards the end rather than the beginning to complete the higher average of 4000)... for 80-100 hours per month, that's not bad. It's 25/hr at worst, and at best it's 40/hr (shekels), with the added benefit of gaining experience and possibly winning much more if you play better than break even. Of course, you could lose as well, but that's a risk that must be factored in, and in fixed limit you're not looking to make 'big moves' where you risk an entire buyin on a hand.
Thoughts? Anyone currently doing something similar to this and have advice? Has anyone here made a similar goal and succeeded?
